Folk began with a feeling I couldn’t shake:
The Redding I was experiencing was not the Redding the rest of the world could see.
After moving from Los Angeles to Redding, I discovered a place shaped by rivers, mountains, independent businesses, creative people, and a way of life that felt more spacious and connected.
But much of what made Redding special was difficult to discover from the outside.
The thoughtful restaurant. The artist working quietly from a home studio. The shopkeeper who remembers your name. The gathering that turns strangers into neighbors. The familiar trail, the unhurried morning, the long summer evening by the river.
These were the things giving local life its character—yet they were not always being seen or shared in a way that reflected how meaningful they really were.
I knew people in Los Angeles who would love spending a weekend here if they could truly picture themselves in it. I also knew that people who had lived in Redding for years could still be surprised by the creativity, beauty, and care unfolding around them.
I didn’t want to reinvent Redding or make it look like somewhere else.
I wanted to reveal what was already here.
That became Folk.
OUR PURPOSE
To help people know this place more deeply—and love it a little more.
Folk is a local guide and community journal devoted to the people, places, and stories shaping life in Redding and the North State.
Through thoughtful storytelling, beautiful photography, considered guides, weekly letters, and real-life gatherings, we make it easier to discover what is here—and to feel more connected to it.
We tell the stories behind the storefronts.
We introduce the artists, founders, growers, makers, and neighbors creating something with care.
We share the places worth returning to, the landscapes worth protecting, and the gatherings worth showing up for.
Because a place becomes more meaningful when we know the people behind it.
WHO FOLK IS FOR
Made for those who live here—and those just beginning to discover it.
For longtime locals, Folk offers a reason to look again: to find something new, support a neighbor, and feel proud of the place they call home.
For new residents, it is a warmer way into the community—a guide to the places, rhythms, and people that make Redding feel like home.
For visitors, it is an invitation to experience this place as a local might: slowly, thoughtfully, and beyond the usual list of attractions.
Different people may arrive at Folk for different reasons.
The hope is that everyone leaves feeling a little more connected to this place.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Attention is a form of care.
When a local business is thoughtfully shared, more people walk through its doors.
When an artist’s work is seen, new possibilities open.
When people gather in real life, a city begins to feel more like a community.
And when the story of a place is told honestly and beautifully, people begin to see it differently—including the people who have lived there all along.
Folk believes in community over clicks, relationships before revenue, and quality over quantity.
We believe local stories deserve the same level of thought, beauty, and care as stories told on a national stage.
We believe the people of Redding should always remain the heroes of its story.
And we believe every place should be left more loved than we found it.
MORE THAN A GUIDE
Folk is being built to live beyond the screen.
The website is where our stories and guides have a permanent home.
The Folk Letter is a weekly ritual for discovering what is new and what is happening next.
Our gatherings are where readers become neighbors and the community comes to life in person.
Over time, Folk may take the form of markets, printed guides, creative collaborations, seasonal traditions, and experiences that bring people together.
The form may grow.
The purpose will remain the same:
To celebrate local life, strengthen community, and help more people fall in love with Redding.
A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER
This is an invitation to look closer.
Folk is not about pretending Redding is perfect.
It is about paying attention to what is meaningful.
It is about noticing the person behind the counter, learning the story behind the place, taking the road toward the mountains, and showing up when the community gathers.
I created Folk because I believe Redding deserves to be represented with imagination, honesty, and care.
But I also created it because I believe knowing a place changes how we live within it.
We choose local more often.
We introduce ourselves.
We stay a little longer.
We participate instead of simply passing through.
We begin to belong.
That is the Redding I want Folk to reveal—and help nurture for years to come.
